TEMPLE, CHARLOTTE
Charlotte Temple is a fictional character from a popular 18th Century novel Charlotte, A Tale of Truth, by Susannah Rowson. The book was first published in England in 1791 followed by publication in America in 1794. It was wildly popular. It depicted the story of a beautiful English girl swept off her feet by a British soldier and brought to America where she was abandoned, penniless and pregnant.
It is believed that the name of the fictional Charlotte Temple was carved on the vault stone by a stone cutter working on the construction of the third church. It was the perfect opportunity as the workmen were camped out in tents for several years while the Church was being built. By 1855, New York newspapers are reporting on pilgrimages to the grave site where newly married couples weep over the fate of the wrongly used Charlotte.
